Transparency data on departmental spending

Today I received an email from the Department of Transport concerning Transparency data on departmental spending in October 2014 covering the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency, Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency, Highways Agency, Maritime and Coastguard Agency and others. I never quite worked out who the others were.

I’m sure I have been sent this information in previous months but I guess I have never felt moved to investigate further before. I downloaded the file.

What was I expecting to find – evidence of vast swathes of profligate spending by government departments, the squandering of resources by senior agency managers? I’m not really sure exactly what I thought I was going to find.

What I did find was the recording of incredibly mundane information ranging from the repair of faulty urinals in Livingston (£900) to fire alarm servicing in Redruth (£31.50).

Along the way I saw evidence of the supply & fit of a yagi 3 element antenna at Todhills check site M6 Carlisle and at the Boston Spa check site A1 Jct 45 (£2635.08). I have no idea what a yagi 3 element antenna is, I Googled it and found a page but still did not really understand it.

So what was the point of my endeavours? Well it will save you doing it and as far as I can tell there was no evidence of fast swathes of profligate spending by government departments, or of the squandering of resources by senior agency managers, least ways not in October 2014.
