Apotheosis

the_one_that_got_away_award-r2c1290ea4a6147fcae0a8a367dee15f9_8bozs_8byvr_324Every day is a learning day. I had a call today from, an MSA member who is having some problems with his ADI registration he is not currently working in the driver training field and he is struggling to fulfil the requirement to attend for a standards check.

During our conversation he said to me “I’m not that bothered about staying on the ADI register it is hardly the apotheosis of my life.”

I had to look it up. Amongst various dictionaries I found a number of definitions perhaps the most appropriate:

apotheosis (ah-pah-thee-OH-sis), noun
The culmination or highest point
Example: the “one that got away award” was the apotheosis of John’s less than successful angling career

My mind was immediately drawn back to the introduction of the hazard perception test for ADIs and I recall a very tearful man telling me through his sobs that getting on to the ADI register was the greatest achievement of his life and that he was scared he might lose that status because of HPT. I’m pleased to say he did not and as far as I know no MSA member was removed from the register as a result of HPT. One or two had to have a lot of help and multiple attempts but all got through in the end.

Should qualifying for the ADI register be the apotheosis of a person’s career as a driver trainer? I guess the answer has to be no. If we do not have the willingness to develop our skills and improve our knowledge base we will simply stagnate.

stagnate (stag|nate, staɡˈneɪt) verb
Cease developing; become inactive or dull
Example: teaching can easily stagnate into a set of routines
